Thinking activity: Then and Now:- Colonialism, Imperialism, postcolonialism, Globalization, Environmental studies.
Hello Friends!
Here I am discribe two part of Ania Loomba's book which is in our syllabus. This task given by Dr Dilip barad sir.
First of all I introduce first part of Situating colonial and post colonial studies. This is coming from Ania Loomba's book and also referance to M. H Abraham's thought.
Definition:
Colonialism and imperialism are often used interchangeably.
The word colonialism, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, comes from the Roman ‘colonia’ which meant ‘farm’ or ‘settlement’, and referred to Romans who settled in other lands but still retained their citizenship.
This is a good reference to have you are questioning or problematizing. In the dictionary which is given a worldview, problematize things beginning with looking at the definition of something, meaning of something looking at the language of self.
At the according to OED,
a settlement in a new country … a body of people who settle in a new locality, forming a community subject to or connected with their parent state;
It is land for others,it was racist to encounter there will be conquest also there will be fight and there will be lots of bloodshed. But all there I was of negative perspective. That time what is dictionary has been done, dictionary definition has beautifully put all the words beautiful aspects of other sides.
Process of Colonialism in Historical sense:
Ania Loomba's locket history in process of colonialism. We can see in dictionary what is a meaning of displacement,
"Displacement.. is a very inadequate word that conveys nothing of its true Displacement is not about moving.. It is about losing a river. Losing access to clean, safe, drinking water losing land that is watered richly losing the grass that your herds grazed on. Losing your cattle. Losing the milk that came from your cattle losing meaning. honey and herbs losing the right to protest when somebody in a uniform shows up to set fire to your home. What else was left to lose?" So colonialism can be defined as the conquest and control of other people’s land and goods. But colonialism in this sense did not begin with the expansion of various European powers into Asia, Africa or the Americas from the sixteenth century onwards; it has been a recurrent and widespread feature of human history. This is a historical pettern.
Process of imperialism:
This kind of ‘shallow penetration’ can be seen as a prototype for modern imperialism, which functions largely through remote control.
What is colonialism and Imperialism:
The distinction between pre-capitalist and capitalist colonialisms is often made by referring to the latter as imperialism. This is somewhat misleading, because imperialism, like colonialism, stretches back to a pre-capitalist past. Imperial Russia, for example, was pre-capitalist, as was Imperial Spain. Some commentators in fact place imperialism as prior to colonialism.
Like ‘colonialism’, imperialism too is best understood not by trying to pin it down to a single semantic meaning but by relating its shifting meanings to historical processes. Early in its usage in the English language it simply means ‘command or superior power’.
The OED defines ‘imperial’ as ‘pertaining to empire’, and ‘imperialism’ as the ‘rule of an emperor, especially when despotic or arbitrary; the principle or spirit of empire; advocacy of what are held to be imperial interests’. As a matter of fact, the connection of imperial with royal authority is highly variable.
Thank you....
