About the auther:
Elaine Showalter is literary critic and teacher and founder of gynocritics, a school of feminist criticism concerned with "women as writer with the history, themes, genres, and structures of Literature by women." And her doctoral thesis into her first book, A Literature of their own: British women novelists from Bronte to Lessing, a pioneering study in which she created a critical framework for analysing literature by women. Her next book, the female malady: women, Madness,and english Culture, was a historical examination of women and the practice of psychology. She was wrote many works in her life.
Feminist Criticism: Elaine Showalter:
Showalter is concerned by stereotypes of feminism that a see feminist critics as being 'Obsessed with phallus' and 'obsessed with destroying male artist'. Showalter wonders if such stereotypes emerged from the fact that feminism lacks a fully articulated theory.
In Toward a feminist poetics Showalter divided feminist Criticism into two sections:
1) The women as Reader or feminist critique
2) The woman as writer or Gynocritics.
Showalter traces the history of women's literature, suggesting that it can be divided into three phases:
