#What is Archetypal criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?
THE WORD “ARCHETYPE" MEANS:
“Arche" means "old" or "original" and “type" means "form". Together it means "original form".
ARCHETYPAL CRITICISM Refers to the universal symbols, theme, characters and images we find repeated in literature.
ACCORDING TO WATSON AND eDACHARME:
★ Archetypal Criticism is a recurrent, universal pattern or motif holding the same or similar meaning and significance for all individuals in every age and in every part of the world.
Thus archetypal criticism increases both the satisfaction in reading the work of art and the knowledge of a literary piece.
We are able to see that an idea, image, character, setting or theme in a film, or literature is based upon the same or similar patterns in other film or literature. And it is also seen in past and present culture.
We are able to see that an idea, image, character, setting or theme in a film, or literature is based upon the same or similar patterns in other film or literature. And it is also seen in past and present culture.
Archetypal criticism looks for a kind of pattern into texts and traces them through works of classical literature into modern texts. This way they interprets those repetitions as symbols or manifestations of universal human conflicts.
Archetypal Critics are also known as "Mythological Critics. And they look for underlying recurrent patterns in literature. These kind of patterns show universal meaning and basic truth about the human situations for readers regardless of where and when they live. So, an archetype is a kind of pattern in any work of art or literature, and its meaning is understood by any reader. An archetype will elicit the same response from a reader of any country (either he is from England or India).
Archetypal critics suggest that all human experience is linked through literature and that this experience is expressed again and again using the same patterns throughout time and space. They also say that the recurring patterns in literature prove that there are universal truths and we can learn them by reading.
Carl Jung (1875-1961)
He was suggested Archetypes" for the first time in criticism. He was psychologist who applied the term archetype to the "premordial images" that spring from our common human experience. He suggested that we all share a "collective conscious" in which all of the history of human experience is contained and to which we all have access through our subconscious minds.
These archetypes or in other words images sare expressed by our subconscious through the legends, dreams, film, religion, imaginations and literature of the human race. It is because we all recognize these archetypes or patterns or images when we read or see them in literature.
Archetypes can be categorised as:

NORTHROP FRYE:
Northrop Frye was also an outstanding archetypal critic. He suggests that literary archetypes can be classified by genre and these genres seem to correspond to the seasons of the year and the life cycle of human being.
According to Northrop Frye all narratives fall into one of four mythos (myth). Each myth has six phases, sharing three with the preceding myths and three with the succeeding myths. • Thus, comedy is compared to Spring, Romance with Summer, tragedy with Autumn, and Satire with Winter.
The context of genre determines how a symbol or image is to be interpreted. Frye outlines five spheres in his scheme: human, animal, vegetation, mineral and water.
HUMAN:
The human world of comedy is representative of wish-fulfilment and being community centred. Whereas, tragic human world is of isolation, tyranny and the falling of hero.
Animals in the comic genres are docile and pastoral (e.g. Sheep), whereas, animals in tragic genre are predatory and hunters (e.g. Wolves).
VEGETATION:
In comedy, vegetation is represented as gardens, flowers, fruits etc. And in tragedy, vegetation is represented as wild forest or as barren.
WATER:
In comedy, water is represented as rivers whereas in tragedy water is represented as floods, sea etc.
