Mathew Arnold: The study of poetry

Hello Readers!

Today I am discussed about an English poet and critic MATTHEW ARNOLD and his essay "The study of poetry" as my point of view. This thinking activity given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir click here to visit blog.

* We can see that Mathew Arnold's views on characteristics of good poetry. " Poetry is the criticism of life , governed by the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty." Arnold's views on the historic, the personal, the real estimate, both are fallacious.

★ Characteristics of The study of poetry:

(1) poetic truth and poetic beauty
(2) Truth and seriousness of matter
(3) Critic must be free from all prejudics personal and Historical
(4) Felicity and perfection of matter
(5) Excellent action and grand style
(6) Nature magic and profoundness

The first essay in the 1888 volume was originally the published as the general introduction to T.H. wara's anthology, the English poets (1880)

Arnold's theory of poetry expressed in "The Study of poetry" may be questionable in details and on minor points. It is true that his views on poetry are quite mature. They are in harmony with modern ideas. Arnold believes in the high destiny of poetry. So he does not hesitate to express his exalted view of poetry.

★Touchstone Method by Mathew Arnold

"Poetry is interpretative by having natural magic in it, and moral profundity."

Touchstone Method is a short question from a recognised poetic masterpiece 'The study of poetry (1880) employed as a standard of instant comparison for judging the value of other works. "The Touchstone Method" introduced scientific objectivity to critical evaluation by providing comparison and analysis as the two primary tools for judging individual poets. Thus, Chaucer, Dryden, pope and shelling fall short of the best because they lack "High seriousness" even Shakespeare thinking too much of expression and too little of conception. Arnold's ideal poets are homer and Sophocles in the ancient world.

Thanks you...
