Aristotle and Plato's view
1. How far do you agree with Plato's objection to freedom of expression and artistic liberty enjoyed by creative writers?
Ans.yes. I agree with you Plato's objection to freedom of expression and portrays their expression about literary world. In the 18th and 19th centuries there were many people felt that novel reading is waste of time. There were many resons behind this belief. One of them was Plato's influence who believed that"Litreture is an imitation of an imitation." The perfect example is the Hollywood film 'Harry potter.' We can see that Plato write in his book 'The republic' says that poets misguide people and they prrovoke evil ideas in people's mind hence they should be panished from the ideal state.
2. With reference to the literary texts you have studied during B.A. program, write brief note on the texts which followed Aristotelian literary tradition.
Ans. In B.A. program I have studied "Othello". It is the best example which followed the Aristotelian literary evoked pity and terror in the audience; This is tragedy. Othello is one of the tragic protagonist. This play in we can see that at the end of the tragedy tragic death of Othello, in his wife Desdimona he killed in his wife and other characters are accured. Unity of time, place and action are not follow by Shakespeare. At the end of tragedy Othello becomes victim of circumstances and his tragic death makes play more tragic. It was cathersis, or washing clean of the soul.
3. With reference to the literary texts you have studied during B.A. program, white brief note on the texts which did NOT follow Aristotelian literary tradition.
Ans. I have studied during B.A. program Romeo & Juliet. This work through he can say that dramas as they believed that his dramas were specially to entertain mass rather than class.
According to Aristotle the tragic here is defined by five main characteristics.
1st Tragic hero is born nobility.
2nd He possesses hamartia which leads to his downfall.
3rd Hero experiences peripetria.
4th Action of tragic hero result in an increased self awareness and knowledge.
5th Audience must fed pity sympathy of fear for the character.
Captain Ahab was not born in nobility. He is not possesses increased self awarness. Instead his hamartia leads to his death. So last scene in Ahab only qualifier as a tragic hero under one or two of Aristotle's characteristics. So, we can say that this is not follow the Aristotelian theory.
4. Have you studied any tragedies during B.A. programme? Who was the Tragic protogonist those tragedies? What was their 'Hamartia' ?
Ans. yes, i studied All my sons sons and Othello. Othello play is a most famous example of hamartia Because he killed his wife and without knowing everything that is his error forvhis downfall.
"All my sons" drama is a protagonist tragedies. joe kellar is the protagonist of the play. His sense of guilt drives him to suicide and before taking his life, he refers to his son Larry's statement that he was ending his life to make amends met their end by using the cracked cylinder heads dispatched from the factory of Joe Keller. Alk my son's is the conflict between family loyalities and the social responsibilities.
5. Did the 'Plot' of those tragedies follow necessary rules and regulations proposed by Aristotle?
Ans. yes, the 'Plot' of these tragedies follow necessary rules and regulations proposed by Aristotle.
The Plot is fairly unified focusing on Othello and his fate and events only in so far as they are relevant to his focus. Aristotle proposed the tragic unities of place, time and action. A modern interpretation would say that Othello's tragic flaw was that is taken into himself, the prejudices of those who surrounded him.
